Limnological Characteristics Reveal Metal Pollution Legacy in Lakes near Canada’s Northernmost Mine, Little Cornwallis Island, Nunavut

چکیده
We compared modern limnological characteristics of three lakes near the world’s northernmost base metal (lead-zinc) mine, Polaris Mine, which operated from 1981 to 2002 on Little Cornwallis Island (Nunavut, Canada), a suite sites Resolute Bay (Qausuittuq), Island. Although both study regions are underlain by broadly similar geology and experience nearly identical climatic conditions, present-day water chemistry variables differed markedly between two islands. Specifically, Mine recorded substantially higher concentrations zinc lead, as well several other heavy metals (cadmium, molybdenum, nickel, uranium, vanadium), relative closed in 2002, elevated levels our 2017 survey likely legacy contamination prior operations.

Interglacial and Holocene temperature reconstructions based on midge remains in sediments of two lakes from Baffin Island, Nunavut, Arctic Canada
Midge remains (Insecta: Diptera: Chironomidae and Chaoboridae) from two upland lake basins on the Cumberland Peninsula of Baffin Island were analyzed and the results used in a transfer function to reconstruct paleotemperatures. This upland region remained ice-free throughout the last glacial cycle and the two lake basins retain sediments deposited during the previous interglacial period as well...

متن کاملLimnological and pollution study of Shahdadroud River, Kerman province
Abstract Shahdadroud River is one of the most important rivers in Kerman province that during previous years has been threatened by drought and anthropogenic pollution. This river supplies some parts of drinking water of Kerman city and some vicinity villages. The main objective of the present study is consideration of pollution situation of the river; for this purpose, limnological and biolo...
متن کاملFluvial metal transport near sources of acid mine-drainage: relationships of soluble, suspended and deposited metal
The Afon Goch (Anglesey, UK) is a short (12 km source to estuary) stream highly contaminated by acid mine drainage (AMD) throughout its length, due to past-mining at the head of the stream. Metal distribution is strongly controlled by the pH, which increases downstream particularly at confluences with two unpolluted tributaries. A pH increase causes precipitation of metals, primarily Fe as hydr...
متن کاملHeavy metal concentrations in marine sediments impacted by a mine-tailings spill, Marinduque Island, Philippines
A mine-tailings spill occurred on the island of Marinduque, Philippines, on 24 March 1996. Originating from the Marcopper Mine, tailings sludge flowed down the Boac River abruptly and during subsequent storm events. Most of the tailings material has since accumulated in the nearshore environment along the western coast of the island. Nineteen sediment cores were collected from this site and ana...
